Description: Studio led by visiting professor Shawn Rickenbacker on pollution remediation with partner Caitlin Soden. The project is sited across from the UN and uses its location to create a monumental call to action on undoing the damage caused by current power sources. The project focused on improving the typical scrubber smoke stack typology by thickening it to hold program and pairing the industrial interior systems with an activated facade. The skin acts as a VOC and CO2 capture system for local contaminants. The system materials, activated carbon and a material currently being tested in submarines, were designed as panels that allow easy removal once saturated. On the interior, half of the building was dedicated to industrial scrubbers to remove CO2 from the FDR Express and tunnel below the site, while the other half was open to the public for education, research and carbon credit trading.
